Of all the professional disciplines,
a legal education has the distinction of imparting
to the student sophisticated skills of analysis
and refined communication techniques. A legal
education is no longer the exclusive preserve
of those individuals aspiring to the practice
of law. In today's complex world, being equipped
with a law degree seamlessly integrates with a
variety of disciplines and is viewed by many as
the professional degree of choice.
The Pre-Law Scholars Programme (“PSP”) is designed for highly driven students between the ages of 15+ to 18, particularly bright junior college students who are keen on mapping out their tertiary education path and equipping themselves with the relevant skill set and on developing their EQ and AQ.
The PSP is a series of sequenced, interrelated
sessions introducing participants to basic concepts
of law and a skill set that will be invaluable
to their chosen career path, in law or otherwise.
Participants will receive intensive exposure to
the possibilities of law as a career through seminars,
workshops and networking. Participants are exposed
to the law school experience and the academic
curriculum through a noncredit course in core
legal subjects and extensive interaction with
practising lawyers.
The other important component
of the curriculum includes modules dealing with
'soft skills'. Participants will be introduced
to, among other things; the important skill of
handling oneself at interviews, managing and presenting
a resume. Workshops on self-motivation and entrepreneurship
also form part of the curriculum.
The course includes weekly section-wide seminars
as well as workshops led by experienced Teaching
Fellows and practising lawyers. This is a continuing
project dedicated to strengthening critical thinking/problem
solving skills, increasing self-awareness and developing the
knowledge capital of the participants.
